Transferring Credits into DCTC

A student wishing to transfer credits into Dakota County Technical College must complete the regular admissions process, designate a major field of study and have official transcript(s) from previous college(s) sent directly to DCTC’s Office of Admissions.

Official transcript(s) must be received in a sealed envelope. If hand carried, transcript(s) must be delivered unopened with the official seal intact. Student copies and faxed transcripts are not considered official.

General Guidelines for Transfer of Credit:

Only those courses that are applicable to a student's chosen degree, certificate, or major will be considered for transfer.

Courses approved for transfer must be comparable in nature, content, and level and match at least 75% of the content and goals of DCTC courses.

Transfer credits need to have a grade of C- or higher and be from a college with a regional association of colleges and schools (North central, Middle States, etc) in order to be considered for transfer.

Transfer credits do not affect the student's grade point average (GPA). Courses transferred in will be recorded on the transcript under the "transfer credits" section.

Advanced Placement (AP)

A score of 3 is the minimum for AP course exams. Credit can be given for a specific college course if a test covers substantially similar material. If the test material does not match an existing course, students can be given elective credits. Download a specific listing of exams and equivalent courses at DCTC.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP)

Students must achieve a score of 50 % or higher for CLEP exams. Download a specific listing of exams and equivalent courses at DCTC.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

DCTC awards credit for subsidiary level exams with a score of 5 or higher. Download a specific listing of exams and equivalent courses at DCTC.

International Credits

A comprehensive course by course analysis by an organization that is a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Service (NACES) is required before DCTC can evaluate transfer of credit.

DCTC recommends the following organizations:
WES (World Education Services) http://www.wes.org ($150)
ECE (Educational Credential Evaluators) http://www.ece.org ( $135)

A complete listing of all members of NACES can be accessed at http://www.naces.org/members.htm

Military Credit

Credit achieved through military training will be evaluated for transfer. The Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services (ACE) will be carefully considered in the evaluation process. Download more detailed information on obtaining a military transcript.

Technical Credits

Transfer of technical credits will be considered for courses that have been completed within five years prior to application for admission to DCTC. Students with technical courses which were completed more than five years prior to application may be able to use the credit by examination process to demonstrate course content mastery and receive credit. Please see an advisor in Student Services to review past technical credits.

Tech Prep College Credit

Tech Prep is accepted per written agreements with each High School. Please visit, High School/ College Credit Agreements to view a list of all agreements Students must complete the course with a “B” or better. At that point their high school teacher will request certificates for each student who qualifies. Upon college registration, students present these certificates to the registrar to request credit for the selected course(s) Certificates must be used within two years of High School graduation

Planning to transfer DCTC Credits to Another college?

Minnesota's public colleges and universities are working to make transfer easier. Students can help if they plan ahead, ask questions, and use pathways created by transfer agreements.  Students currently enrolled at DCTC should:

  1. Discuss plans with an advisor in the Student Services Office.
  2. Review any transfer agreements (formal written agreements between DCTC and other institutions.)  Through these agreements a significant number of credits from DCTC Associate degrees are accepted by many four-year colleges and universities. These transfer credits make pursuing a baccalaureate degree affordable, accessible and convenient for DCTC graduates. To view a list of the transfer agreements, DCTC Transfer Guides.
  3. Call or visit the intended transfer college to obtain the following:
      • college catalog and transfer brochure
      • information on admission criteria and on materials required for admission (e.g., portfolio, transcripts, test scores). Note that some majors have limited enrollments or prerequisite courses.
      • information on financial aid (how to apply and by what dat
  4. Review these materials and make an appointment to talk with a transfer specialist in the intended college or major.
  5. Visit www.mncas.org to view course by course articulations for selected colleges.
  6. Visit www.mntransfer.org,  the MnSCU transfer web site

If you have any questions regarding the transfer agreements, please contact your advisor or at or

Rights of a Transfer Student

top

A transfer student has a right to all of the following:

  • A clear, understandable statement of an institution's transfer policy
  • A fair credit review and an explanation of why credits were or were not accepted
  • A copy of the formal appeals process

Usual appeals steps are as follows:

  1. The student fills out a Petition Form. Supplemental information that can be provided to reviewers - a syllabus, course description, or reading list - can help.
  2. The registrar reviews the petition.
  3. The student receives, in writing, the outcome of the petition.
  4. The student can appeal the decision to the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs.

For help with transfer questions or problems, contact Colleen Moser at 651.423.8277 or colleen.moser@dctc.edu  or schedule an appointment with an advisor in Student Services.
