DCTC Illustrates Commitment to Diversity on Campus

Two powerful events highlight college's dedication to multicultural issues

April 4, 2005

ROSEMOUNT, Minn.- Two recent, well-attended events on the Dakota County Technical College campus demonstrated the college's commitment to diversity education.

On April 6, the annual DCTC Multicultural Day was a huge hit, complete with food, dance, crafts and interactive displays featuring the many cultures represented by DCTC students. Nations represented at the event in the main campus' Central Commons area included: Iran, Japan, Somalia, Mexico, Cambodia, Russia, and many others.

Two days later, DCTC hosted a diversity workshop for faculty and staff, with acclaimed diversity trainer Lee Mun Wah as the guest speaker.

Mun Wah's workshop focused on "unlearning racism" and "provided a forum for participants to discover conscious and unconscious ways in which racism has affected their lives," according to Peou Pin-Mene, DCTC's multicultural advisor. "The workshop was designed to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of our differences."

"This was an opportunity for our college to engage in an interactive discussion on diversity and racism," DCTC President Ron Thomas added. "Participants grew both professionally and personally. We could all see and learn how racism and discrimination affects people of different races."
